How to get Started:

1. Refer to the Out-of-Class Planning Map:  Review the information about the Planning Map on the web.  Learn about the Four Quadrants and the value of participating in experiences outside of the classroom.

2. Consult with Advisors:  Consult with individuals who might help you understand what experiences might be of value to you in achieving your personal and professional goals.

  • An academic advisor might be able to give you ideas about how to supplement your classroom learning with out-of-class experiences.

  • The CSI can help you find out more about organizations on campus.

  • The SERVE center will help you find service opportunities. 

  • The Career Center can help you determine experiences and activities that will help you prepare for graduate school or your chosen career.  They can also help you find employment at Truman and an internship.

3. Set Goals: The Out-of-Class Experience Planning Map website can help you assess your needs (   ) and/or set goals (  ) regarding cocurricular experiences.

4. Make a Plan: Create a plan that will allow you to balance your out-of-class involvements with your academic priorities and across the Four Quadrants.

5. Participate: Participate in as many meaningful cocurricular experiences as you are able to based on your available desire, time and energy. 

6.  Reflect: Record and reflect upon your experiences in your Cocurricular Journal.  Your Cocurricular Journal will help you keep an accurate and up-to-date record of your accomplishments.  Reflecting upon experiences will help you record your achievements, growth and development over your college experience.

7.  Respond: You will receive notification via e-mail when an approved experience is added to your Cocurricular Record.  The e-mail will invite you to add information into your Cocurricular Journal about that experience if you haven't already done so.  Make the appropriate corrections if you would like your Cocurricular Record to be consistent with your Cocurricular Journal (ie.  Are the titles the same?  Is the Quadrant assignment consistent? etc.)  If you are not interested in receiving e-mail notifications of additions to your Cocurricular Record, click here ( ).

8.  Review: Periodically review your Cocurricular Journal to make sure that it is accurate and up-to-date.
